Reports this week suggest that Everton is considering bringing back former manager David Moyes if they part ways with Sean Dyche. The Toffees have had a challenging start to the season, suffering four defeats in their first five matches. Their latest outing ended in a 1-1 draw against Leicester City, where they again dropped points after leading thanks to a goal from summer signing Iliman Ndiaye in the 12th minute.
In midweek, Everton was eliminated from the EFL Cup after losing to Southampton in a penalty shootout, despite Abdoulaye Doucoure scoring to equalize in a 1-1 draw. The team lost 6-5 in the shootout after extra time.
Moyes has reportedly emerged as the top candidate to replace Dyche if a managerial change occurs. Although the club publicly supports Dyche, concerns are rising about the team’s poor start to the 2024/25 season. Reports indicate that the club is carefully evaluating potential replacements, with Moyes being described as “incredible” and “one of the best.” Former Chelsea and Brighton manager Graham Potter has also been mentioned as a possibility.
Moyes managed Everton from 2002 to 2013, leading them to the FA Cup final in 2009. After his tenure at Everton, he managed Manchester United and Real Sociedad, followed by two stints with West Ham, where he won the UEFA Europa Conference League in 2023. Both Moyes and Potter are currently free agents and could step in immediately if Everton decides to pursue a change.
In other news, Everton is reportedly in contract talks with star striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who is in the final year of his contract. The club hopes to secure his future and prevent him from leaving on a free transfer next summer. Discussions are ongoing, but Calvert-Lewin has attracted interest from various clubs, including potential suitors in Germany and Newcastle United, who showed interest over the summer. However, a move to Newcastle could be complicated as he would need to compete with Alexander Isak for a starting spot.
Calvert-Lewin has been with Everton since 2016, scoring 70 goals in over 250 appearances and ranking as the club’s 12th all-time top scorer.
