Just In: The player West Ham released last summer scores the winner in biggest Derby in the world
Manuel Lanzini was released by West Ham United last summer after an eight-year tenure at Upton Park and the London Stadium.
His departure was a poignant moment for West Ham fans who had adored him since he first joined on loan from Al-Jazira in the summer of 2015.
Originally starting his career at River Plate, Lanzini had often expressed a desire to return to Estadio Mâs Monumental while with the Hammers. He was immensely popular among supporters, many of whom believe he should have been retained instead of being let go last summer.
The 31-year-old was pivotal for West Ham, particularly during his first three seasons. Unfortunately, a ruptured ACL injury ahead of the 2018 World Cup hindered his ability to regain his top form, though he occasionally showcased his talent.
Recently, Lanzini proved he still has it on a grand stage.
In a highly anticipated match in Argentina, Boca Juniors faced River Plate—often regarded as the biggest derby in world football. Lanzini started for River at La Bombonera and silenced the Boca fans with a goal just 20 minutes into the match, helping his team secure a 1-0 victory.
It was a fantastic night for Lanzini, and West Ham supporters would surely celebrate his success.
Lanzini was a cult hero at West Ham, affectionately known as “the diamond.” As the song goes, “Ain’t nobody like Lanzini…”
It’s a tremendous disappointment that he suffered that severe injury in the summer of 2018. I truly believe that, had he avoided that ACL injury, he could have become one of the Premier League’s top attacking midfielders and a standout in world football.
Lanzini was exceptional during his debut season at Upton Park, forming a brilliant partnership with Dimitri Payet. Even a year after leaving, he continues to make headlines—it’s wonderful to see.
