His stint at Middlesbrough in early 2022 was disappointing, with just two goals in 21 matches, and his move to Venezia in Italy didn’t go as hoped.
“It hasn’t gone as I expected in the last couple of years,” he admitted. “I made poor choices on and off the pitch. If I could redo things, I would. This move to Italy was crucial to escape my previous environment and get a fresh start.”
Although his time in Italy was tough, Connolly aimed to make the most of it. “It’s a crucial point in my career,” he reflected. “It feels like ages since I played regularly in the Premier League. That’s on me; I need to be more professional. I had to adapt to a new environment and work hard, which I’m starting to enjoy.”
Despite a brief stay at Hull, he showed signs of revival, scoring five Championship goals by the end of September and earning a spot back in the Republic of Ireland squad. “It hasn’t been a straightforward journey for Aaron,” noted national team coach Stephen Kenny.
However, Connolly lost that momentum and didn’t start a league match for Hull from mid-January onward, making only four appearances.
Now, as he joins Sunderland, this short-term deal presents a low-risk, high-reward scenario. Has Connolly finally turned a corner?
