Danny Murphy aims Leicester City dig as he responds to Steve Cooper chants
Danny Murphy urged Leicester City fans to hold off on forming negative opinions about Steve Cooper too quickly.
The Foxes advanced to the League Cup’s last 16, but struggled through a goalless draw against League Two side Walsall, ultimately winning on penalties. After five Premier League matches without a win, some fans expressed their frustration with chants like “Cooper, sort it out” and “this is embarrassing.”
Murphy noted on talkSPORT, “There will always be a segment of fans who are never satisfied. Last year, they dominated the Championship with possession-based football, yet some felt it was ‘too much tika-taka.’ They wanted a change then.”
He criticized the current playing style since Cooper took over from Chelsea-bound Enzo Maresca, but ultimately supported Cooper’s pragmatic approach. “I’ve seen a few games, and while they aren’t particularly entertaining, I think Cooper is doing the right thing. He’s new and working with several new players, so it’s understandable that they need time.”
When asked if the frustrated fans have unrealistic expectations for a newly-promoted team, Murphy suggested, “Possibly. There’s always a debate between style and substance. They’re not in the relegation zone, and if they can stay out of it by season’s end, he’ll have done his job. They just need a bit more time.”
He concluded, “Let him settle in before judging too harshly. It hasn’t been great, but they’re not at the bottom. They’re competing for him, even if they aren’t pretty to watch right now.”
