An intriguing question has been posed to Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer.
The 54-year-old had a remarkable career with Newcastle, becoming the club’s captain following his world-record £15 million transfer. Shearer remains Newcastle’s all-time leading scorer with 206 goals, a record that is likely to stand for many years.
However, Shearer’s trophy cabinet is not as full as one might expect. He did win the Premier League title, but that was during his time at Blackburn Rovers. During his tenure with Newcastle, he failed to win any silverware, competing at a time when Manchester United dominated English football.
Interestingly, Shearer could have played for Manchester United, as Sir Alex Ferguson attempted to sign him twice, both times to no avail.
This rivalry with Manchester United has always been a point of contention, with fans from both sides exchanging chants whenever they meet.
Recently, Gary Lineker posed a hypothetical question to Shearer on “The Rest Is Football” podcast: if he had to choose between joining Manchester United or Sunderland, which would he pick?
“Neither,” Shearer replied. “I’d take up golf!”
His witty response sent Lineker and Micah Richards into fits of laughter, showcasing Shearer’s characteristic humor.
Shearer has a long-standing rivalry with Sunderland, Newcastle’s biggest rivals. He has often taken jabs at Sunderland, including a recent dig at former manager David Moyes during the same podcast.
Despite this, Shearer has expressed a desire to see Sunderland back in the Premier League, hoping it would lead to more frequent Tyne-Wear derbies. The FA Cup clash earlier this year marked their first encounter since 2016.
As for the next derby, it remains uncertain, though Sunderland is aiming for a quick return to the Premier League after a strong start to the 2024/25 Championship season, currently sitting second after six games.
