If someone had scripted West Ham’s season so far under Julen Lopetegui, few would have believed it. Except, perhaps, the fans, for whom much of this feels almost predetermined.
The excitement surrounding the Hammers peaked during the summer transfer window. Initial doubts from supporters about Lopetegui replacing David Moyes faded as West Ham made several significant signings.
With the board supporting technical director Tim Steidten and Lopetegui with £155 million to acquire nine new players, the team shed 12 players but managed to retain its key stars. Hopes and expectations were high among fans, media, and owners as the season began.
However, just two months in, ominous signs are re-emerging over the London Stadium. Fans have yet to see any new style or identity to rally behind. Lopetegui’s gradual integration of new signings has drained much of the excitement.
The situation worsened when the new striker missed three games due to injury, while Jhon Duran, the player West Ham fans wanted, has been excelling at Villa. Reports indicate that Lopetegui himself hobbled into his post-match press conference and needed crutches to leave Anfield after injuring his calf while reacting to a play.
At 57, Lopetegui appears fatigued just seven games into the season. Fans naturally worry about injuries to key players, given the club’s history, but a manager getting injured is unusual.
While it’s unlikely this will affect his presence on the bench against Brentford, it may hinder his usual vocal style on the touchline. Fans will hope this incident fosters a stronger bond between Lopetegui and his players. Regardless, the manager needs a strong response at Brentford.
