Former Sunderland defender Wes Brown has cautioned that the Black Cats may struggle to remain in the Premier League if they achieve promotion.
The 44-year-old played for Sunderland from 2011 after a successful career at Manchester United, where he won the Premier League five times, along with two Champions League titles, two FA Cups, two League Cups, and two Community Shields.
Brown has been impressed by Sunderland’s strong start in the Championship, with five wins from their first six matches. He believes that the support of the fans could help sustain their momentum.
In an interview with Instant Casino, Brown expressed optimism about Sunderland’s chances of promotion this season but warned that staying in the Premier League would be challenging.
“Sunderland have begun the season well, and you can see the players are backing the manager and feeling confident,” he said. “However, if they were to reach the Premier League this season, it would be extremely tough for them to stay up.
“Looking at the teams promoted last season, two of them are currently in the bottom four, and I believe they are better equipped than Sunderland would be if they were promoted. Nevertheless, it would be a significant achievement for Sunderland to return to the top flight.
“At a club like Sunderland, a strong start can rally the fans and the city, allowing them to build momentum. I hope they can maintain this form and avoid a dip as the season progresses.
“The Premier League needs to find ways to make it easier for promoted teams to survive. There’s a consistent trend of at least two promoted teams dropping straight back down, and I think the same could happen with Blackburn if they were to go up without changes being made.”
