“That’s football”- Ange Postecoglou Breaks Silence on Furious Lucas Bergvall Substitution: What Really Happened

Ange Postecoglou discussed his decision to substitute Lucas Bergvall during Tottenham’s Europa League match against Qarabag on Thursday.

The Spurs manager had to make the change when defender Radu Dragusin received a straight red card just eight minutes into the game for bringing down forward Juninho.

Bergvall was taken off shortly thereafter to bring on Destiny Udogie, reestablishing a back four, leaving the young Swedish player visibly upset after just 12 minutes on the field with only six touches.

While Bergvall’s frustration was evident as he sat on the bench for the rest of the half, Postecoglou emphasized that someone had to be substituted due to Dragusin’s mistake.

Despite this setback, Postecoglou believes the 18-year-old has a bright future ahead. “That’s football,” he said when asked about the substitution. “He’s 18, and he will have plenty more opportunities. We needed to adjust defensively.”

Regarding Dragusin’s red card and the team’s lackluster start, he noted, “It wasn’t ideal. I wasn’t happy because we started very slowly. We aimed for a high tempo, but it seemed the delay affected us. Our passing was passive, and when that happens, someone tends to switch off.”
