Julen Lopetegui will be missing a key midfielder for the trip to Brentford. West Ham’s Edson Alvarez is suspended for this weekend’s London derby after receiving a red card during the midweek Carabao Cup match against Liverpool.

The Hammers went to Anfield looking for a positive result following a disappointing 3-0 loss to Chelsea at home. With a shaky start to the season, Lopetegui’s position has come under scrutiny, and the 5-1 defeat to Liverpool adds to his concerns.

West Ham will face Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium on Saturday. The Bees are coming off two consecutive losses to Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City but have displayed strong attacking potential with recent wins over Crystal Palace and Southampton.

Brentford’s Thomas Frank will be without the injured Yoane Wissa, sidelined for several months due to an ankle injury. However, Bryan Mbeumo is in good form, having scored four goals this season and could pose a threat to West Ham.

Alvarez, who was rated just 3/10 by LondonWorld and called ‘foolish’ for his performance against Liverpool, is crucial for West Ham’s midfield, particularly in disrupting opposition plays. The club paid £35 million to acquire him from Ajax in 2023, and he has since made 47 appearances.

In the match against Liverpool, Alvarez received his first yellow card in the 67th minute while West Ham trailed 2-1. He picked up a second booking just 12 minutes later, leading to a 3-1 loss.

As a result of his two yellow cards, Alvarez will miss the match against Brentford but is expected to return for the encounter with Wolves in early October.
