Former Sunderland manager Lee Johnson believes that after a strong start to the Championship season, the Black Cats’ main challenge will be maintaining their performance during the winter months.After a disappointing previous season, Sunderland has begun positively under new manager Regis Le Bris, currently sitting second in the table with 15 points from 18 possible, just behind West Brom.Johnson emphasized the importance of Sunderland’s stature, asserting that such a club deserves to be in the Premier League. He identified the busy winter period as crucial for sustaining their current form.Reflecting on Sunderland’s journey so far, Johnson told the BBC, “I feel a connection to their progress, but I’m not claiming credit for their position in the Championship. This is a great club that belongs in the Premier League and will eventually get there due to its size and heritage.”He praised the young squad’s fantastic start, noting that this is often seen with younger teams. Johnson pointed out that their real test will be in the winter months to maintain performance levels.“They have shown agility, identity, and a solid playing style. Many players have been with the club since their League One days. Sunderland can be very powerful when they have momentum, but a shift in that momentum can be challenging to overcome, especially with such a passionate fanbase.”Last season was tough for Sunderland after Tony Mowbray’s departure and Michael Beale’s appointment, but fans are hopeful that Le Bris can build on this promising start.
