Régis Le Bris was pleased with Wilson Isidor’s first start for Sunderland, despite the team missing the opportunity to take the top spot in the Championship with a 2-1 loss to Watford.
Isidor, who joined on loan from Zenit St Petersburg, stepped into the starting lineup due to Eliezer Mayenda’s injury. He managed to score Sunderland’s equalizer in the second half before a late penalty from Tom Dele-Bashiru secured the win for Watford.
Le Bris commented, “Wilson performed well in his first game, working hard to support the team. It was challenging to face their back three with just one player, but he persevered and earned his goal.”
He noted that Sunderland’s back four struggled against Watford’s frontline, prompting a tactical shift to a back five after 50 minutes.
“From that point, the game shifted. Watford are a formidable team on the counter, and we knew we had to be cautious if we lost the ball high up the pitch,” he added.
Le Bris acknowledged that fatigue set in towards the end, emphasizing the need for precise decision-making. “Watford maintained their counter-attack threat even with their substitutes. At halftime, we discussed the importance of solid late-game defense, but we lost the initial duel after a long goal kick,” he explained.
