Following the match, Fernandes spoke with Sky Sports and expressed his discontent with the red card decision. “I let my teammates down,” he said, acknowledging their efforts under challenging circumstances. “We didn’t start well even with 11 players. After the red card, they did exceptionally well, but we conceded two more goals, making it hard to cover all the spaces. Still, I’m proud of the team’s resilience.”
Fernandes continued, “Nobody likes being sent off. It’s tough to watch my teammates working hard for a result. We conceded two more goals, but they gave it their all. In the tackle, I didn’t use my studs; I made contact with my ankle. It’s a clear foul, but it’s never a red card. Maddison agreed it was a foul but not a red.”
He added, “If this is a red card, we need to reevaluate many other incidents. I’ve seen worse fouls on Onana that didn’t warrant a red card. The contact wasn’t strong enough, and if the referee wants to show a yellow for the counter-attack, that’s understandable. I don’t get why VAR didn’t review it.”
Fernandes concluded by highlighting the team’s struggles before the red card, noting that they often failed to connect with quick passes, which led to his own error resulting in the opening goal.
