Bruno Fernandes believes he should not have received a red card during Manchester United’s 3-0 home defeat to Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.
In the 42nd minute, Fernandes tackled James Maddison, which referee Chris Kavanagh deemed dangerous while United was trailing 1-0. The 30-year-old was sent off, and United’s struggles intensified without him in midfield.
After the match, Fernandes defended himself, asserting that his ankle made contact with Maddison, not the bottom of his shoe.
“Never a red card, in my opinion,” Fernandes stated on BBC Match of the Day. “I agree it was a foul, but not a dangerous one. The referee suggested there was clear contact with the studs, but that’s not accurate. I didn’t make contact with my studs or foot; it was my ankle. It’s definitely a foul.
“If he wants to show me a yellow for the counterattack, I can accept that, but anything more is unwarranted.”
