The Premier League has explained the VAR decision to overturn the offside ruling on Kai Havertz’s late goal, ensuring Arsenal clinched all three points against Leicester City.
In a thrilling match, Arsenal led 2-0 at halftime thanks to goals from Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard. They could have expected an easier second half against a winless Leicester.
However, the second half was anything but simple. Just two minutes in, James Justin cut the deficit, and he equalized in the 63rd minute with a stunning volley, making it 2-2.
It appeared that Leicester goalkeeper Mads Hermansen and his defense would frustrate Arsenal. But a corner in the 94th minute changed everything, as it deflected off Wilfred Ndidi, sending the Emirates Stadium into a frenzy and putting Arsenal ahead 3-2.
Leicester made attacking changes in a last-ditch effort to salvage a point. In the 98th minute, Kai Havertz scored into an empty net, but celebrations were halted by the assistant referee’s offside flag, according to Football London.
After a VAR review, the goal was ultimately awarded. The Premier League confirmed the overturning of the decision, stating that the ball had been played to Havertz by Justin.
The Premier League Match Centre on X (formerly Twitter) clarified: “Havertz’s goal was initially disallowed for offside. The VAR checked and confirmed that the ball was played to Havertz by the defender, recommending that the goal be awarded.”
