“He’s a good player, he has a good mentality, he is still very connected with the team. We need this kind of player”- Regis Le Bris identifies the Sunderland player he anticipates will contribute this season, even with limited playing time.
Sunderland will face Derby County at the Stadium of Light on Tuesday night. Regis Le Bris has expressed his admiration for Leo Hjelde since his arrival at the club and believes he will get opportunities to play this season.
Although Hjelde has been a regular in the matchday squad, he has yet to see any league action. He showed promise during pre-season in his natural central defense position, but fierce competition has kept him sidelined.
With Mepham solidifying his role alongside Luke O’Nien in defense, Le Bris reassured Hjelde that he trusts him for when chances arise. The manager has maintained a stable lineup this season and emphasizes the importance of working closely with players who aren’t regularly involved.
“He’s very close to the team and will definitely have opportunities,” Le Bris stated. “He’s a talented player with a great mentality, and he remains engaged with the squad. We need players like him, who, while not currently on the pitch, are still integral to the team.”
Le Bris highlighted the importance of communication and support for all players. “For those actively involved, it’s easy to connect due to regular feedback and meetings. For others, we must ensure they feel valued, discussing their development and the overall project.”
Hjelde will be crucial as Sunderland prepares for back-to-back home matches this week, especially with Dan Ballard likely missing both due to an ankle injury sustained against Plymouth Argyle. Although Ballard returned to the bench against Middlesbrough, he was absent for the defeat to Watford.
