“Why Pierre Ekwah Jumped at the Chance to Leave Sunderland: His Surprising Decision Revealed

Pierre Ekwah has revealed he didn’t think twice about leaving Sunderland for Saint-Étienne this summer. The midfielder was an important part of Sunderland’s squad last season, making 40 appearances in the Championship, but he was loaned to the French club after not playing in the team’s initial league matches.

At just 22 years old, Ekwah found his playing time limited at Sunderland following the appointment of new manager Régis Le Bris. Since joining Saint-Étienne, he has already featured three times in Ligue 1, including his debut in a 1-0 victory over Lille on September 13.

Discussing his move, Ekwah expressed his happiness about returning to France. “When the opportunity arose, I didn’t hesitate,” he stated. “It feels a bit strange because I left for England at a young age, but it’s nice to be back in my home country, hearing French spoken and holding press conferences in my native language.”

Saint-Étienne currently sits 17th in Ligue 1, struggling in the relegation zone with just four points from six matches, having lost four times.

In contrast, Sunderland is performing well in the Championship, positioned second after seven games. Despite a recent loss to Watford, they remain just one point behind league leaders West Brom. Sunderland will face newly-promoted Derby County next at the Stadium of Light.

Ekwah’s absence has not significantly impacted Sunderland, as the team has adapted well, with players like Alan Browne and Chris Rigg stepping up. The loan move benefits all parties, allowing Ekwah to gain valuable experience while Sunderland retains control over his future, potentially enhancing his transfer value for a permanent move next summer.
