So far this season, Rigg has made nine appearances and scored once against Middlesbrough, helping the Black Cats climb to the top of the table.
BBC Radio Newcastle pundit Gabbiadini told the Daily Mail: “He’s the kind of player who keeps fans on the edge of their seats every time he receives the ball. His passing is quick and efficient, and his balance is remarkable. He reminds me a bit of Jack Grealish with how he carries the ball so close to his foot.
“He’s also very tenacious, never shying away from tackles or challenges. His determination has been a standout feature of his game. It’s rare to see a 17-year-old playing so many matches consistently; not many players have made such an impact at that age in the league, apart from Bellingham when he was at Birmingham.”
Rigg has spent his entire career at Sunderland, progressing through their youth ranks and making his senior debut in January 2023 against Shrewsbury Town. Since then, he has played 34 matches for the Black Cats and scored four goals.
Under manager Regis Le Bris, Rigg has quickly earned his place this season and is thriving with the freedom the Frenchman provides. He is contracted to Sunderland until June 2027.
Looking ahead, Sunderland hopes to retain Rigg amid inevitable interest from other clubs. The Black Cats recently secured a 2-0 victory against Derby County, with goals from Jobe Bellingham and Wilson Isidor, and they face Leeds United tonight.
