REGIS LE BRIS has been impressed by the passion and dedication of the Stadium of Light crowd, but he has cautioned his Sunderland players not to take the club’s supporters for granted as they aim to maintain their push for Championship promotion.
Le Bris highlighted the Sunderland fanbase as a major reason for his decision to take the role at Wearside earlier this summer, noting the tremendous support his team has received in the early stages of the season.
During Tuesday’s home victory over Derby County, over 39,000 fans filled the stadium—a figure that many top-tier clubs across Europe would envy.
Every Sunderland away match has seen sold-out crowds this season, and while Le Bris appreciates the enthusiastic support, he has reminded his players that they must consistently earn it.
“You could see in the Derby game that even on a midweek night, the stadium was packed,” said Le Bris. “The energy was palpable.
“The connection with the fans is crucial, but as I emphasized throughout pre-season, we need to deserve that connection.
“By playing well, working hard, and overcoming various challenges, we can build that bond. We are displaying the right mentality, striving to play our best football, and I believe the supporters see that.”
Sunderland has enjoyed a strong start to the season, but while Le Bris is pleased with his players’ progress over the past two months, he insists it’s too early to set definitive goals for the remainder of the season.
“I can’t predict what will happen,” he stated. “It’s still challenging to evaluate the team’s trajectory and individual players’ paths.
“This team is young, but they exhibit great attitude and a desire to learn—both from successes and setbacks. We’ve responded well after defeats, which is encouraging.
“I see potential here, but we face tough opponents. Our focus should be on our conduct, improving our game, and addressing our weaknesses.
“The league’s landscape is unpredictable. We can’t forecast our final position, but if we continue on our current path, I am confident in our ability to perform well.”
