Tottenham Hotspur is currently facing an injury crisis, with Ange Postecoglou watching his players struggle to stay fit at Hotspur Way. The latest setback could see veteran Ben Davies return to the starting lineup for the Lilywhites’ match against Brighton on Sunday.
Udogie Faces Late Fitness Test
First-choice left back Destiny Udogie will undergo a late fitness test to determine his availability for the clash against the Seagulls. Although his injury is not considered serious, Postecoglou may be cautious about risking the former Udinese player for an extended period.
Djed Spence, formerly of Middlesbrough, is a likely candidate to step in for Udogie, maintaining the pace and power on the left flank. Despite being more comfortable on the right, Spence has recently delivered strong performances at left-back. Alternatively, Postecoglou might opt to start Micky van de Ven in that role.
King Supports Davies for Starting Role
Given Udogie’s potential absence, former Spurs scout Bryan King is confident that Ben Davies could start against Brighton. King believes Davies’ experience makes him a valuable asset for the match against Fabian Hürzeler’s team.
In an exclusive interview with Tottenham News, King stated:
“Udogie missing out would be an issue. It was wise to keep him in London to focus on his recovery. He’s a key player for the team, but there are options available. They have Spence, and we’ve seen van de Ven play left-back. However, I personally think Davies should start; you can’t underestimate experience. He would be the best choice if Udogie is unavailable.”
Although Ben Davies has taken on a more rotational role this season, making three starts in the League Cup and Europa League, the international break may provide Spurs with the opportunity to feature him amid a packed schedule of European and domestic matches.
It’s easy to overlook the significant presence Ben Davies holds in the dressing room at Hotspur Way; his leadership and experience could prove vital for Spurs in tomorrow’s match.
