West Ham fans thought they had seen the end of a manager with a “big six bias,” but now they’re facing a similar situation. Many supporters of West Ham and other “Other 14” clubs have felt overlooked by the England setup for some time.
Gareth Southgate consistently ignored West Ham’s top performers during his tenure, frustrating fans with his repeated omissions of star player Jarrod Bowen. Despite Southgate’s claims to prioritize form over reputation, Bowen often found himself sidelined, and when he did make the squad, he rarely received a fair chance.
Southgate further irritated Hammers fans by suggesting that Declan Rice improved after leaving West Ham earlier this year. Eventually, he had no choice but to include Bowen in his Euros squad due to the winger’s outstanding performance last season.
Many believe Bowen should be contending with Bukayo Saka for a starting spot, especially if Cole Palmer shifts to a more central role. Despite Bowen’s impressive showings, he saw limited playtime at the Euros.
Interim manager Lee Carsley is currently vying for the England position. He included Bowen in his first squad in September but overlooked Max Kilman and Aaron Wan-Bissaka, despite claiming a clean slate. Both Kilman and Bowen have been excellent since their arrivals.
Wan-Bissaka is arguably the Premier League’s best defensive right-back and has even played left-back for West Ham, a position of need for England.
All three players were outstanding in West Ham’s 4-1 victory over Ipswich, with Bowen scoring and providing two assists. In limited minutes under Carsley, Bowen outperformed Harry Kane, who had played significantly more.
Bowen’s impressive form this season has led him to outpace several England call-ups in goals and assists. His latest goal against Ipswich marked his 18 non-penalty goals since the start of the 2023/24 Premier League season, surpassing players like Son Heung-Min and Mo Salah.
Following the win, Bowen addressed his England snub, emphasizing that he doesn’t need extra motivation to perform. “The England news was just one of those things,” he stated on West Ham’s website. “You either let it affect you or you go out and prove yourself. My mindset remains focused on the club.”
Bowen, along with Kilman and Wan-Bissaka, highlighted the absurdity of Carsley’s selections. The exclusion of the league’s top defensive full-back, especially with England’s current lack of depth in that area, raises eyebrows.
As for Kilman, his absence means West Ham can avoid the risk of injury or added pressure impacting his performances. England’s oversight is undoubtedly a gain for West Ham.
