Sunderland head coach Regis Le Bris has shared insights about his conversation with Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier after his costly blunder in the 2-2 draw at the Stadium of Light.
Meslier, 24, was instrumental in the outcome, allowing a straightforward ball into the box to slip through his fingers and into the net during stoppage time. This error prevented Leeds from surpassing Sunderland at the top of the Championship table, keeping the Black Cats in first place as the EFL heads into its second international break.
Le Bris, who previously worked with Meslier at Lorient’s academy in France, expressed mixed feelings about the incident in a post-match press conference.
After being seen talking to Meslier post-match, Le Bris said, “I feel for him. I really like him as a person and as a goalkeeper. Mistakes can happen to anyone on the pitch, but for goalkeepers and strikers, the consequences can be significant. We’re pleased with the result, especially after such a tough match against a strong team.
“It’s tough for him because making that kind of mistake is disappointing. We discussed the situation, noting that the ball changed direction after hitting the ground, which caught him off guard. I’m happy for us but not for him.”
Leeds manager Daniel Farke also commented on the error, stating, “In 30 years of professional football, I’ve experienced many last-second wins and losses, but nothing like this. The game seemed over; the goalkeeper had the ball, and the referee was about to blow the whistle for a well-deserved victory. To lose two points like this is heartbreaking and incredibly disappointing for the team. They performed well and deserved better.”
