Tottenham Hotspur once again disappointed their fans just before the international break, losing a match despite leading 2-0 at halftime.
In their away game against Brighton & Hove Albion last Sunday, Tottenham started strong under Ange Postecoglou, with Brennan Johnson scoring for the sixth consecutive match. James Maddison extended their lead to 2-0 before the break. However, Yankuba Minteh quickly reduced the deficit after the restart.
Georginio Rutter equalized just before the hour mark and then assisted Danny Welbeck for a header that completed a surprising comeback in the 66th minute.
Following the match, there was significant criticism of Tottenham’s performance, including from former player Jermain Defoe, who expressed his disappointment with the outcome. Defoe highlighted the need for Spurs to adapt their tactics, suggesting they should have played more defensively after gaining their two-goal lead.
“The game changes, and you can’t just stick to one way of playing,” Defoe noted. “If you go up two goals, you might need to adjust for a while. For ten minutes, they should have defended deeper.”
While entertaining football is important, Spurs must also focus on achieving results. Postecoglou didn’t need to abandon attacking play completely; a brief defensive period could have allowed them to regroup before pushing for a third goal.
Looking ahead, Tottenham will next face West Ham United in a Premier League match at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, set to kick off at 12:30 pm on Saturday, October 19.
