Micky Van de Ven has played both centre-back and left-back for club and country over the past year, but he has now shared his preferred position.
Following a challenging performance against Brighton in the Premier League, where Tottenham’s left side struggled significantly, Van de Ven is heading into the international break with some concerns. After leading 2-0 at halftime, Spurs’ defense fell apart under intense pressure from Brighton.
While Van de Ven is recognized for his remarkable speed in defense, his one-on-one defending during the second half left much to be desired.
**Centre-Back or Left-Back?**
Van de Ven established himself as a central defender with Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga but has also filled in at left-back when needed. Spurs utilized him in that position at the end of last season when Destiny Udogie was injured, and he has played there multiple times for the Netherlands during Euro 2024.
However, the talented defender clearly favors his central role. In an interview with ESPN, he stated, “I can play in both positions. I prefer to play as a central defender. That makes sense given my experience with Tottenham and Wolfsburg. With Nathan and Jurrien both injured, I can step in at left-back if necessary, but it’s not an issue for me.”
**Teaming Up with Van Dijk**
The Netherlands boasts a wealth of talent in central defense, including Virgil Van Dijk, Matthijs De Ligt, Stefan De Vrij, Nathan Ake, and Jurrien Timber. Despite the potential synergy with Van Dijk, Van de Ven has seldom been chosen to partner him in the center.
He commented, “I’ll leave that decision to the coach. We’ll see what happens. Virgil is an outstanding defender, so I wouldn’t mind playing alongside him.”
