Italian press blown away by Tottenham defender Destiny Udogie
Tottenham Hotspur defender Destiny Udogie played for Italy in their UEFA Nations League match against Belgium. Under manager Ange Postecoglou, Udogie has become an integral part of the team, earning a substitute appearance on Thursday night at the Stadio Olimpico.
Despite Italy losing a 2-0 lead after being reduced to ten men, Udogie’s performance caught the attention of Gazzetta dello Sport, which rated him 6/10, noting he was “useful” and “lightning quick on the flank.” He entered the match as a substitute and contributed for the final 20 minutes.
The newspaper commented: “The substitution was justified: it added physicality and speed, helping out in midfield as well. Very useful.”
Udogie has been impressive for Spurs, where he and Pedro Porro play crucial roles in Postecoglou’s strategy. Both full-backs frequently overlap and deliver quality crosses. However, pundits have raised concerns about their defensive skills, particularly after conceding three goals in the second half against Brighton in their latest Premier League match.
This season, Udogie has started seven games in the Premier League but has yet to score or provide an assist, an area he can improve to enhance his contribution to the team. Increased goal and assist production from the full-backs would significantly benefit Spurs.
