Sunderland’s impressive start to the Championship season demonstrates the effectiveness of a well-considered plan, as noted by sporting director Kristjaan Speakman. Throughout a challenging 2023/24 season, the focus on youth development sometimes seemed overly ambitious, especially after a disappointing 16th-place finish with 17-year-old Jobe Bellingham at the forefront. Critics questioned whether the club had prioritized potential over experience.
However, Speakman insists there was never a need to overhaul Sunderland’s strategy, even during tough times. The club did acquire some experienced Championship players like Alan Browne, Chris Mepham, and Simon Moore, but also invested in younger talents such as Ahmed Abdullahi and Milan Aleksic, reinforcing their commitment to youth.
“You have to believe in the culture,” Speakman emphasizes. He points to significant investments like the £3 million spent on Bellingham and the rise of Chris Rigg, who became Sunderland’s youngest-ever goalscorer. They also opted to trust Anthony Patterson as their starting goalkeeper, resisting the temptation to recruit a more seasoned alternative.
Two years later, Patterson has established himself as one of the league’s top keepers, catching the attention of Premier League clubs like Arsenal, Liverpool, and Manchester City. Meanwhile, Rigg and Bellingham are also drawing interest from top-flight teams.
Despite concerns over potential departures, the attention on Sunderland’s young players reflects the effectiveness of their coaching and recruitment strategies. “You have to give these kids the opportunity, and they need to prove themselves under pressure,” says Speakman.
With only six teams conceding fewer goals than Sunderland this season and Patterson allowing just eight goals, former England midfielder Carlton Palmer advises the young keeper to remain with Sunderland, suggesting that consistent first-team action is more beneficial than sitting on a Premier League bench.
