Sunderland Head Coach Discusses Club’s Untapped Potential
Sunderland head coach Regis Le Bris has stated that he has “only scratched the surface” of the club’s potential during the early phase of his time on Wearside.
The Black Cats have had an impressive start to the season, accumulating 19 points from their first nine matches and sitting at the top of the Championship table on goal difference as the league prepares to resume after the second international break. Much of their strong performance has been attributed to Le Bris’ influence since he took charge this summer. In a recent interview with The Telegraph, the French coach shared his vision for the team’s style of play and the high expectations he holds for their future.
He explained, “Our game model focuses on creating triangles across the pitch, and the players are learning to develop their own creativity. This has emerged naturally in certain areas, and we are becoming more fluid. We’re forming interconnected triangles that originate in the midfield, which is fundamental to our approach.
“This team continues to strive to play our way, regardless of the circumstances. We aim to build confidence and the ability to perform under pressure, which has been a key focus. Playing out from the back requires composure under pressure, and while it’s challenging, cohesion is essential. The players need the confidence to lose the ball and quickly regain it. We worked diligently on both aspects during pre-season, and as we gain more experience, it becomes easier. I believe I have found a club where I can flourish; there is something unique here, and I feel we have only begun to tap into it.”
Le Bris also reflected on his decision to join Sunderland, indicating that it was an easy choice for him. He stated, “I didn’t concern myself with the club’s history or expectations. Being new to the city and the club made it simpler for me. I understand the history, but it doesn’t weigh heavily on my shoulders. I wanted this to be a fresh start for both myself and everyone involved. The past is behind us.
“I had the opportunity to move after Lorient, and after discussions with my agent at the end of May, Sunderland expressed interest. We had four meetings, which was quite a lot, but it became clear that we could collaborate effectively. The talks centered on the new project and the club’s ambitions to return to the Premier League.”
