At first glance, it might seem that Anthony Gordon is Newcastle United’s fastest player. The 23-year-old winger is incredibly quick and can easily trouble defenders with his pace, whether he has the ball or not.
Newcastle captain Jamaal Lascelles recently declared Gordon as the team’s speedster, noting that Tino Livramento is a close second. However, surprisingly, it’s not Gordon or Livramento who holds the title for the fastest speed recorded in a Newcastle shirt this season.
That distinction belongs to Harvey Barnes. The 26-year-old has reached a top speed of 34.7 km/h, according to BBC Sport and Opta, which track the fastest players at each Premier League club this season.
While Micky van de Ven is the quickest in the league overall at 37.1 km/h—a remarkable feat for a center-back—Barnes’s speed highlights the offensive firepower within Newcastle’s squad, surpassing both Gordon and fellow fast player Alexander Isak.
Interestingly, Anthony Elanga of Nottingham Forest has also clocked in at 35.9 km/h. Newcastle attempted to sign Elanga on transfer deadline day, but their offer was rejected, which could have added even more pace to Eddie Howe’s attack.
As for why Gordon isn’t leading the speed stats, it’s worth noting that he had a somewhat rocky start to the season, appearing out of form early on. Although he looks sharper now, he has been playing as a striker in recent matches, which may have limited his opportunities to reach top speed in open spaces.
In contrast, Barnes had a full pre-season and has been able to play wide, allowing him more room to utilize his speed. Despite this, it’s reassuring for Newcastle fans to see such quick players throughout the team. Sandro Tonali and Joe Willock are also quick, and Jacob Murphy and Miguel Almiron are certainly no slouches either.
While Gordon may not be the fastest this season, he leads the Premier League in sprints, having completed 187 so far, outpacing Chelsea’s Nicolas Jackson, who has 157.
