Chris Sutton believes Leicester City’s match against Southampton will be closely contested.
The Foxes return to action today, hoping to secure back-to-back victories away from home. Saturday’s game is already being dubbed a six-pointer, as both teams understand the importance of earning three points in their fight to avoid relegation. Sutton sees little to separate the two sides.
In his BBC column, the former Celtic player noted that despite Leicester’s recent win, the teams are evenly matched. He stated, “Leicester achieved their first victory of the season last time out with a solid win over Bournemouth, but I question how much that momentum will carry them, especially since many players left for international duty right after.”
He recalled Leicester’s 9-0 victory at Southampton in October 2019 but predicted this match would be much tighter. “A draw won’t do much for Foxes manager Steve Cooper, but that’s my prediction.”
Steve Cooper is eager to overcome his poor away record. After celebrating his first league win as Leicester’s manager, his next goal is to improve the team’s away form. During his tenure at Nottingham Forest, he faced criticism for their lack of points on the road, managing to secure only one point away from home this season, despite squandering a two-goal lead at Crystal Palace.
In Forest’s first season back in the Premier League, Cooper garnered just eight of 38 points away from home and won only once before his dismissal in December 2023.
Saturday presents an excellent chance for Cooper to break this trend, especially with a local rivalry match against Forest coming up next week. Ending this run would certainly strengthen his relationship with the fans.
