Tottenham defender Radu Dragusin is not planning to leave the club in January, despite limited playing time.
The Romanian centre-back, who moved to Spurs for £26.7 million from Genoa last winter amid interest from Bayern Munich, has made only one Premier League start this season. His challenges intensified last month when he was sent off just seven minutes into a 3-0 Europa League win over Qarabag.
Several Italian clubs, including Napoli, are keeping an eye on his situation, but the 22-year-old remains committed to Tottenham and will not seek a mid-season transfer, even if he continues to be sidelined.
Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven are currently Ange Postecoglou’s preferred centre-back duo, but there is confidence that Dragusin will still see playing time in European and cup competitions this season. Sources close to the player suggest that he is focused on proving himself on the pitch to secure a starting position.
This comes after Dragusin’s agent, Florin Manea, expressed concerns last season about his client’s lack of playing time and suggested a tactical shift to a three-man defence to better utilize Dragusin’s aerial abilities.
Manea stated, “The coach has mentioned he prefers not to use a three-man defence, but Tottenham concedes a lot of goals. A three-man setup could provide more security. Dragusin’s strength in the air would be beneficial, especially given Tottenham’s issues with set pieces.”
Dragusin chose to join Spurs over an offer from Bayern Munich, despite interest from Napoli, the reigning Serie A champions.
Following his red card against Qarabag, he served a one-match suspension during the match against Ferencvaros and will be available for selection, fitness permitting, for the upcoming game against AZ Alkmaar next Thursday.
