West Ham manager Julen Lopetegui plans to speak with Mohammed Kudus following his unacceptable actions during the 4-1 loss to Tottenham. Kudus received a red card in the 86th minute after striking both Micky van de Ven and Pape Sarr in the face.
This incident comes after a challenging week for the Ghanaian, who had to apologize to his national team following a defeat to Sudan, jeopardizing their chances of qualifying for the Africa Cup of Nations.
“I won’t disclose the specifics of our conversation, but we will definitely discuss this,” Lopetegui stated. “Kudus needs to recognize that he can improve his response in such situations, as it reflects poorly on him, the club, and the team. However, I can’t comment further since I didn’t see the incident.”
Kudus’s red card did not alter the match’s outcome, as West Ham conceded three goals in just eight minutes at the start of the second half. Despite scoring first and being one of the standout players in a competitive first half, this latest defeat marks Lopetegui’s fifth loss in ten matches since taking over from David Moyes.
With Kudus facing a minimum three-match ban—potentially longer if the Football Association opts for retrospective action—he won’t be available for West Ham until after the November international break.
Lopetegui added, “We must recognize that our performance wasn’t sufficient. Even against one of the best attacking teams in the Premier League, we need to improve defensively. We’ve been working towards this, and while the international break alters our schedule, it shouldn’t excuse our shortcomings.”
“We knew what kind of team we were facing and how they attack, so I must also improve my communication with the players. We’re all frustrated and disappointed with the result, but we will work very hard for the next challenge.”
It was a notable day for Tottenham’s Yves Bissouma, who scored his second goal for the club. He reflected, “I was fortunate to score the goal that changed the game.
