Julen Lopetegui is reportedly “done” at West Ham United following the team’s 4-1 defeat to Tottenham, according to Rory Jennings.
The Hammers returned from the international break with a disappointing performance in North London, where Mohammed Kudus was also sent off in the closing moments. Despite poor individual displays, talkSPORT pundit Jennings believes Lopetegui is not the right manager to turn things around at the London Stadium.
Speaking on talkSPORT, Jennings stated, “I think Lopetegui is finished. I haven’t seen anything from him that suggests he can reverse the current situation. What has he done to deserve more time?”
He continued, “If you think he can improve performances and win back the fans, then maybe he deserves another chance. But I see no evidence that he can lift West Ham up the league.”
Lopetegui was not the fans’ preferred choice to replace David Moyes this summer. Most supporters wanted a change in management, but few favored another defensive, pragmatic coach.
Besides strong showings against Crystal Palace and Ipswich Town, Lopetegui’s tenure has not indicated he can lead West Ham back to the top half of the Premier League. The team has struggled defensively against Manchester City, Chelsea, and Tottenham, while relying heavily on individual efforts from players like Jarrod Bowen and Kudus to score.
While the players share some responsibility, the ultimate accountability lies with the manager. If Lopetegui cannot demonstrate that he can turn things around quickly, it’s difficult to see how he can recover from this defeat and retain his position.
