West Ham United suffered a 4-1 defeat against Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League on Saturday.
The Hammers started strong, with Mohammed Kudus scoring the opener in the 18th minute. However, Tottenham quickly equalized when Dejan Kulusevski’s precise shot hit the post and went in, despite Alphonse Areola getting a hand to it.
The second half was dominated by Spurs, who scored three goals within 15 minutes through Yves Bissouma and Son Heung-min, along with an own goal from Areola. The situation worsened for West Ham when Kudus was sent off for pushing both Micky van de Ven and Pape Matar Sarr.
Many players underperformed, but Lucas Paquetá had a particularly disappointing outing. The 27-year-old was substituted after an hour for Edson Alvarez, managing just 30 touches and completing 14 of 19 passes (74 percent). He won only three of 12 duels, lost possession nine times, committed two fouls, and was dribbled past once.
Paquetá’s recent form has not matched his earlier performances, including the team’s 4-1 victory against Ipswich Town prior to the international break. Since joining West Ham in 2022, he has been a key player, scoring 15 goals and providing 14 assists in 94 appearances. However, given his lackluster displays, it may be time for Julen Lopetegui to consider benching him for the next match.
Carlos Soler, who joined West Ham on loan this summer, could be an ideal replacement. The 27-year-old has appeared in five Premier League matches, all as a substitute.
