“He’s not worth the large salary he’s receiving and should be let go immediately,” says pundit, recommending Leeds United to offload the player in January due to his significant wages at Elland Road.
On Friday night, Leeds United delivered their strongest performance of the season, with Mateo Joseph and Joel Piroe making significant contributions both as starters and off the bench.
While Piroe started up front against Sheffield United, it was Joseph’s introduction that sparked the duo’s combined efforts, leading to Leeds’ second goal. Piroe, dropping into a deeper role, made a perfectly timed pass to set up Joseph, who scored his second goal of the season. Patrick Bamford came on late in the match.
Leeds is currently dealing with a shortage of players in central defense and midfield, although the return of injured wingers Dan James and Manor Solomon has bolstered their options. In contrast, they have plenty of attacking depth.
Former Leeds player Carlton Palmer has commented on Bamford’s future at the club. Bamford has yet to start a Championship match this season, falling behind both Piroe and Joseph in the lineup, and would require injuries to get a chance to play.
“At his best, Bamford is a great asset at this level, but he hasn’t performed since the 2020-21 season,” Palmer said. “His playing time has been very limited this season, and with his high salary, I doubt Leeds will offer him a new contract.”
Palmer believes it might be time for Leeds to consider selling Bamford in January to bring in another striker, especially if they want someone who can play in the Premier League depending on their league standing.
Bamford’s situation appears precarious after he recently expressed a desire to leave Leeds following a missed penalty against Newcastle before the team’s relegation. With limited playing time and struggles to score, it seems unlikely he will receive a new deal when his current contract expires in June 2026.
Even after pay cuts due to relegation, Bamford remains one of the club’s top earners. As Leeds continues to streamline their squad following a summer overhaul, he may be one of the first to depart.
