Newcastle United is reportedly set to renew its interest in Crystal Palace center-back Marc Guehi during the January transfer window. The Magpies had identified Guehi, a former Chelsea player, as a key target over the summer, making up to four offers in hopes of securing what could have been a club-record signing. However, Crystal Palace remained resolute, rejecting bids believed to exceed £60 million.
In a recent interview, Newcastle’s sporting director Paul Mitchell discussed their transfer strategy, suggesting that the club needed to “draw a line in the sand” to avoid overpaying for players. He emphasized the importance of balancing short-term needs with long-term goals, stating that signing high-cost players at the expense of the club’s growth was not a sustainable approach.
Newcastle is still interested in Guehi, and reports indicate that Crystal Palace may be open to a lower-priced offer as the defender enters the final 18 months of his contract. There are no indications of a new deal being negotiated. Magpies manager Eddie Howe is known to be a strong supporter of Guehi, and while captain Jamaal Lascelles and defender Sven Botman are expected to be fit by January, Newcastle is likely to pursue another center-back. The club is also exploring other options, including Leicester City’s Wout Faes and RB Leipzig’s Castello Lukeba, to ensure they have multiple targets.
