Tony Cascarino believes that one Spurs vice-captain needs to take a more dominant role in matches or risk losing his place in Tottenham Hotspur’s starting lineup.
Maddison was substituted at halftime against West Ham, and while he hasn’t had a poor start to the season, Cascarino suggests his performances may not be up to par, especially as Spurs strengthen in midfield.
After failing to secure a spot in the England squad, Maddison would have been eager to return to action, but some felt he didn’t make enough of an impact in the first half against West Ham. Although he assisted Dejan Kulusevski’s goal, his overall performance was average, and he struggled with set pieces, overhitting most corners.
Things worsened for Maddison when Pape Matar Sarr, who replaced him, brought fresh energy and control to the midfield, contributing significantly to Tottenham’s fourth goal with a well-placed pass to Heung-Min Son. Sarr outperformed Maddison in key metrics, covering more ground and winning more duels.
Cascarino criticized Maddison’s performance in *The Sunday Times*, focusing on his work rate and ineffective crosses. He noted, “I liked that Postecoglou made the bold decision to substitute Maddison at halftime, sending a clear message that no player’s position is secure after the Brighton game. Maddison, a significant signing last year, likely took the substitution personally. Having been subbed off myself in the past, I can relate to that embarrassment.
“While Postecoglou can handle this situation, Maddison needs to reflect on his delivery and overall work rate. He’s no longer a young prospect; turning 28 next month, he must start to assert himself in matches. With his exclusion from the England squad, his place at Spurs isn’t guaranteed anymore.”
Looking ahead, if Kulusevski maintains his form, he could surpass Maddison in the lineup. Additionally, Sarr and Yves Bissouma have also impressed and deserve starts in upcoming matches.
Though Maddison has contributed two goals and three assists in eight league appearances, consistency is key. To remain a starter for Spurs, he needs to consistently deliver impactful performances and enhance the team’s overall play.
