Leicester City’s top talents are finally receiving the recognition they deserve after achieving consecutive Premier League victories, including a comeback win against Southampton this weekend.
Despite trailing 2-0 at halftime, the Foxes refused to let the international break derail their recent momentum. They faced a significant challenge in the second half at St. Mary’s but managed to turn the game around just before the final whistle.
Facundo Buonanotte, on loan, initiated the comeback with a goal in the 64th minute, before Jamie Vardy equalized from the penalty spot following Ryan Fraser’s red card. Jordan Ayew then scored the dramatic winner in the eighth minute of stoppage time. Buonanotte’s performance earned him a spot in Troy Deeney’s BBC Sport team of the week.
Deeney noted, “Although his team struggled in the first half, Buonanotte’s bravery stood out. He provided the Foxes with a crucial spark and played a key role in the turnaround.”
With the third-most touches for Leicester, alongside seven tackles, five shots, five crosses, four dribbles, and three key passes in addition to his goal, the 19-year-old’s contributions are well-deserved. However, much of the post-match praise has also gone to teammate Abdul Fatawu, who made a significant impact after coming on as a substitute.
Fatawu’s introduction in the 59th minute changed the game; his speed was too much for Southampton to handle. He set up Buonanotte’s goal with a cutback, hit the crossbar in the lead-up to Vardy’s penalty, and assisted Ayew’s winner.
Deeney also highlighted Steve Cooper as the manager of the week for leading such a strong comeback. He remarked that Cooper could have faced dismissal if Leicester had lost, emphasizing the importance of his halftime adjustments that revitalized the team’s performance.
“Cooper made key changes at halftime, just as he did in previous matches, and his team responded magnificently,” Deeney added. “Coming back from 2-0 down to win was a monumental effort, showcasing their resilience.”
