Régis Le Bris has called on his Sunderland players to assert themselves and their style of play at Kenilworth Road this Wednesday.
Luton Town has had a challenging start to the season after being relegated from the Premier League. However, a convincing 3-0 victory over local rivals Watford on Saturday marked a significant turnaround in form. Rob Edwards’ side, known for being formidable opponents, previously edged Sunderland out in the Championship play-off semi-final.
Le Bris recognizes the unique challenge ahead and believes the best way to address it is to focus on their own game.
“We can’t predict exactly what will happen, but Luton’s style is well established and very effective when executed properly,” Le Bris stated. “I don’t expect them to change their approach; they have strengths that make them tough to handle. Their direct play and ability to win second balls present challenges, and when they perform well, it’s difficult to counter. We need to manage these situations, but we must also impose our style on the match. If we can control possession and dominate the pitch, it will limit their options and reduce their ability to disrupt us. Our main goal is to be proactive rather than reactive.”
“Football is evolving everywhere,” Le Bris continued. “While we may have certain ideas about a country’s playing style, it’s always changing. Luton’s approach can still be very effective and challenging to defend against. I recall a summer friendly against Bradford that presented a similar challenge. It was tough and required us to adapt. We need to be ready for that aspect of the game while also imposing our style. If we play our game well, in that atmosphere and against that opponent, we can create our own problems for them. If we are bold, it could become a challenge for them. If they outperform us, we will have to endure their direct style, which will be tough.”
Currently, Luton Town sits 17th in the Championship table but still harbors ambitions of pushing for promotion throughout the season.
