Former Sunderland player and SAFC Live pundit Danny Collins has shared his thoughts on Sunderland’s recent victory over Luton Town.
On Wednesday night, Sunderland triumphed 2-1 against Luton Town, leaving the Hatters’ fans disappointed after an exciting match at Kenilworth Road.
Rob Edwards’s team aimed to overpower Sunderland, but despite their youth, Sunderland held firm until half-time and scored twice in the second half, thanks to Chris Rigg and Romaine Mundle.
Post-match, Edwards praised both Rigg and Mundle. Additionally, Bournemouth loanee Chris Mepham received accolades for his strong defensive performance, particularly in aerial duels, as Sunderland faced a barrage of long balls and set pieces.
While there has been speculation about Sunderland signing Mepham permanently, that seems unlikely for now.
In the aftermath of the game, Danny Collins named Mepham as his Man of the Match. He stated during the post-match analysis, “It’s the same for me as on Sunday, Chris Mepham. I don’t think you can argue it. He was immense defensively, winning his headers and being in the right place at the right time.”
Mepham also delivered a standout performance against Hull City last weekend, contributing significantly to Sunderland’s crucial away victories.
Next up, Sunderland returns to the Stadium of Light to face Hull City.
As for Dan Ballard, who has been sidelined with injury, Mepham’s impressive form, along with that of Luke O’Nien, may complicate Ballard’s chances of regaining his spot in the starting lineup. Before the match against Luton, Regis Le Bris confirmed Ballard wasn’t fit to play. He is expected to provide an update before the Oxford United match, with indications that Ballard could be ready for the matchday squad soon. However, given Mepham’s current form, Ballard may have to settle for a place on the bench for the next few weeks.
