“Ian Wright SLAMS Eddie Howe’s England Snub While Paul Scholes Reveals Shocking Thoughts on the Newcastle boss
Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe was seen as a strong candidate for the England job, according to Gary Neville and Ian Wright, who believe he deserved the role over Thomas Tuchel. However, former Manchester United star Paul Scholes argues that Howe’s lack of “credentials” played a role in his not being appointed.
In a recent episode of “Stick to Football,” hosted by Sky Bet, Neville discussed the issue, stating, “When the England team moved to St. George’s Park, there was a vision for advancing English coaching and identity. This has been successful over the past eight years. It’s not about being anti-Tuchel; it’s about the struggle of English coaches to build an identity, both here and in Europe. If we can’t appoint an English coach for the national team, it raises questions about our beliefs in the system.
“I support Thomas Tuchel and want England to succeed, but I didn’t expect to return to the days of [Fabio] Capello and Sven [Göran Eriksson]. I thought the next England manager would have to be English, especially given the current struggles in English coaching. I would have chosen either Eddie Howe or Graham Potter.”
Wright echoed Neville’s sentiments, expressing disappointment that Howe wasn’t even interviewed for the position. He questioned the FA’s commitment to promoting English coaches, noting, “What is their plan? The costs and failure rates for coaching courses are significant barriers. It shouldn’t be so difficult or expensive to become a coach in this country.”
In contrast, Scholes believes Tuchel was selected due to his impressive track record. He stated, “While I think Howe and Potter could do the job, they lack the proven credentials and presence that Tuchel has. England performs well until they face a top team. Tuchel has the experience to lead us to success.”
Scholes added that while Howe still has work to do in club football, he thinks Tuchel, despite his relatively short tenures, has the experience necessary for the national team role. He concluded by suggesting that Pep Guardiola would have been the ideal choice, given his long-standing success at major clubs.
