Andy Carroll’s second stint at Newcastle United was a stark contrast to his first.
Initially coming through the Newcastle academy, Carroll quickly became a standout player, excelling in the Championship and seamlessly transitioning to the Premier League. He wore the iconic number nine shirt with confidence, thriving under its legacy.
His impressive performance in the 2010/11 season, where he netted 11 goals in 19 appearances, attracted Liverpool’s attention, leading to a £35 million transfer to Anfield. Fans were heartbroken to see him leave, making his return to St James’ Park on a free transfer in 2019 all the more joyous.
Under Steve Bruce, Carroll believed he could finish his career at Newcastle. However, his second chapter was far from the fairy tale he envisioned.
In a recent interview with The Athletic, Carroll discussed the pain of leaving Newcastle again in 2021 after a lackluster return, scoring just once in 43 matches. He expressed disappointment at not receiving a contract renewal, saying, “I thought I’d be here until I’m 35, but I was gutted when I didn’t get another contract or even a call.”
Feeling disheartened about his career after leaving Newcastle, Carroll later signed with Reading in November 2021 and realized he wasn’t ready to retire. “I want to play and enjoy football,” he said.
Now 35, Carroll is playing in the fourth tier of French football with Bordeaux, where he has already scored five goals in three games. Although his second time at Newcastle didn’t live up to his expectations, it’s encouraging to see him thriving in his current role.
