Dan Burn, a key player since joining from Brighton, struggled significantly during the match, particularly in the first half. Standing at 6’7″, the 32-year-old faced challenges, especially when Jackson turned him easily during Chelsea’s disallowed goal.
Post-match, he received a rating of 5/10 from Newcastle World journalist Jordan Cronin, who noted that Burn had a “torrid first half,” though he improved somewhat after the break. His stats reflected his difficulties, with 72 touches, seven lost balls, and only 50% success in ground duels. On the positive side, he did make four clearances.
Schar’s Struggles Against Chelsea
Fabian Schar also had a challenging day against Chelsea’s attack. The Swiss international was tested by both Jackson and Palmer, struggling particularly with Chelsea’s opening goal after missing a crucial slide tackle on Neto.
Schar’s full-time stats were similarly concerning: 69 touches, 81% pass completion, but only four wins from eight duels and a frustrating 12 lost balls. He was also dribbled past twice. Cronin rated Schar’s performance at 5/10, highlighting the missed tackle that allowed Neto to advance.
Howe will undoubtedly be worried about the struggles of both center-backs as Newcastle heads into a busy Christmas schedule, hoping they can quickly regain their form.
