Jordan Henderson Cleared for Potential Return to Sunderland
Jordan Henderson, the former England midfielder, began his career at Sunderland before achieving great success with Liverpool. Now, he captains Ajax in the Netherlands but has been linked with a return to his boyhood club.
Sunderland captain Dan Neil has expressed support for bringing Henderson back to Wearside. Henderson is reportedly feeling unsettled at Ajax and is open to returning to England. Neil noted that Sunderland’s team morale is exceptionally high after three consecutive victories, including a commanding win over Oxford, which has solidified their lead at the top of the Championship.
At 34, Henderson could bring much-needed experience to Regis Le Bris’s youthful squad, which includes talented players like Jobe Bellingham and Chris Rigg. His stint with Al-Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia ended abruptly, leading him to Ajax.
Neil, who previously sought Henderson’s advice during his time with the England youth team, stated, “He’s a top-quality player. He can come back here if he wants! I’d be a bit nervous telling him what to do!”
He emphasized the positive atmosphere in the changing room, noting the squad’s momentum and fearless approach to play. The team has shown maturity despite its youth, with players like Jack Clarke and Amad Diallo contributing significantly.
Neil cautioned, however, that while the current momentum is impressive, maintaining it is crucial, recalling last season’s struggles despite a strong start. With goals from Bellingham and Wilson Isidor, Sunderland has achieved nine wins in 12 league matches, and Neil believes if they can sustain this form, they can aspire for greater success as the season progresses.
