Tottenham Works to Retain Porro Amid Manchester City Interest

Former Tottenham goalkeeper Paul Robinson has revealed that the club is making significant efforts to keep Pedro Porro away from Manchester City, where Robinson believes the defender would fit in perfectly. Porro has made a considerable impact since joining Spurs, attracting attention from top clubs, including City.

Since transferring from Sporting CP in the 2022/23 season, Porro has established himself as one of the Premier League’s most dynamic full-backs. In his debut season, he contributed three goals and three assists, becoming an essential part of the Spurs lineup.

Last season, he further enhanced his reputation by scoring four goals and providing seven assists across all competitions, solidifying his role as a key player in north London. It’s no surprise that Manchester City, who originally signed him but never played him, are now eager to bring him back.

Robinson: Tottenham “Fighting Tooth and Nail” to Keep Porro

Robinson shared insights on Tottenham’s efforts to fend off Manchester City’s interest in Porro. In an interview with Football Insider, he stated, “From a Tottenham perspective, I wouldn’t want to see him go. He’s definitely on Manchester City’s radar.”

He emphasized the necessity of retaining Porro, adding, “Tottenham is fighting tooth and nail to keep him. To compete for Champions League spots, you need players like him, and selling to rivals is not an option.”

Robinson noted that Porro’s skills would align well with Pep Guardiola’s tactical style. “He’s certainly a player who could thrive in that system, even though it pains me to admit it,” he concluded.

Potential January Departures from Tottenham

In addition to the battle to retain Porro, Tottenham may see some players leave in the January transfer window. Radu Dragusin, who has struggled for playing time since joining a year ago, remains “focused” on proving himself at Spurs, according to his agent.

Timo Werner, currently on his second loan spell at Tottenham, could also be allowed to leave if the right opportunity arises. Spurs have the option to purchase the German forward at the end of the season, but his future remains uncertain.

Additionally, Sevilla’s director, Victor Orta, is reportedly interested in securing a loan deal for Archie Gray, as a move to Spain could provide him with more playing time than he currently receives at Spurs.

Kyle Walker Comparisons

Should Manchester City succeed in signing Porro, it would resemble the acquisition of Kyle Walker in 2017. Walker, a standout player for Tottenham, moved to City and quickly became a vital part of Guardiola’s defense, contributing to multiple title-winning seasons.

Porro, also a right-back, could follow a similar trajectory. With City considering moving on from Walker next summer, Porro might be seen as his successor, continuing the trend of former Tottenham right-backs making their mark at the Etihad Stadium.

City’s interest in Porro indicates a desire to replicate their success with Walker by securing a reliable and dynamic full-back capable of excelling in their system. Conversely, Tottenham will be eager to retain a player who can help elevate the club’s ambitions and support their pursuit of European football.
