Manchester United faced their fourth Premier League defeat of the season, but even their harshest critics expressed sympathy over how they lost to West Ham.
Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer were stunned by the controversial penalty awarded to West Ham, which led to a stoppage-time winner from Jarrod Bowen, sealing a 2-1 victory for the hosts and adding to the struggles of United manager Erik ten Hag.
Bowen’s penalty was one of the most disputed VAR calls in recent Premier League history. Danny Ings collided with Matthijs de Ligt while chasing a loose ball. Referee David Coote, after consulting with VAR official Michael Oliver, decided that de Ligt had fouled Ings, despite arguments that Ings had handled the ball during the play.
On “The Rest is Football” podcast, Lineker stated, “I’ve watched the penalty decision numerous times, and I can’t see any foul. It’s baffling that the VAR overturned the referee’s initial decision. It seems like a mistake to me.”
Shearer added, “No matter how many times you watch it, you won’t find a foul. It’s confusing that two experienced referees would reach this conclusion, particularly Coote, who likely realized he made a mistake but chose to follow the VAR’s recommendation. It was a poor decision.”
While acknowledging the penalty controversy, Shearer pointed out that United’s missed opportunities in the first half ultimately contributed to their loss, saying they should have scored six or seven goals given the chances they had.
Lineker noted the inconsistency in VAR decisions this season, suggesting that the system might be unworkable without an appeals process, given the different interpretations of what constitutes a “clear and obvious error.”
As a result of the defeat, United now sit in 14th place in the Premier League, with only the bottom four teams recording more losses. After the match, Ten Hag described the penalty as an “injustice.” The Premier League later clarified that the VAR found sufficient contact on Ings’ lower leg to warrant a review.
Looking ahead, United are seven points behind fourth-placed Aston Villa and a significant 12 points off leaders Manchester City. They have four crucial home games before the international break, starting with a Carabao Cup clash against Leicester on Wednesday, followed by a Premier League match against Chelsea on Sunday, a Europa League game against PAOK, and another encounter with Leicester in the league. Ten Hag will need positive results to secure his position.
