Gary Neville has pointed to Tottenham’s impact in Erik ten Hag’s dismissal from Manchester United, highlighting the significance of the match between the two clubs.

Both Spurs and United have struggled in the early stages of the 2024/25 Premier League season. As of now, Tottenham sits eighth with 13 points from nine matches, while United lingers in 14th place.

The recent 2-1 defeat to West Ham marked the final straw for Ten Hag, but Neville believes that the decision was already brewing following United’s 3-0 loss to Spurs a month prior.

Neville remarked that the poor performance against Tottenham made it clear that Ten Hag’s position was precarious. He stated on Sky Sports, “After that Tottenham game, I sensed it was coming. It was a disastrous day for Manchester United and for Ten Hag.”

He added, “The missed chances against West Ham were unacceptable. They should have been ahead by halftime. Given the overall poor results and performances, the owners decided to act. I don’t think anyone was truly surprised by the news this morning.”

Neville speculated that the loss to Spurs likely initiated discussions within the club about seeking a new manager. He noted that the club would have started looking for a successor after that game, emphasizing, “That Tottenham match felt like a turning point.”

Concerns for Spurs

Ten Hag’s departure could spell trouble for Tottenham, as United is now only two points behind them. Ange Postecoglou will face increased pressure unless he can quickly turn the team’s fortunes around. If United experiences a surge in form under a new manager, they could easily surpass Spurs, especially given the tough fixtures ahead for the North London club.
