Steve Cooper has provided an update on the fitness of Leicester City centre-back Jannik Vestergaard ahead of their Carabao Cup match against Manchester United.
Vestergaard has not played since the 2-1 defeat to Fulham in August due to an ankle injury. He was fit enough to represent Denmark during the October internationals, where he performed well.
Despite this, the 32-year-old missed the comeback win over Southampton and the 3-1 loss to Nottingham Forest. Cooper has now confirmed that Vestergaard is available for selection.
During Tuesday’s pre-match press conference, Cooper stated, “Jannik is available again. He had a minor setback with his ankle, but he’s back with the group and brings valuable experience. We’ll assess his readiness for the match.”
Cooper also addressed the situation regarding left-back Victor Kristiansen, who sustained a groin injury before the defeat to Forest. He clarified that while it is a muscle injury, it is not serious and should keep Kristiansen out for just days to weeks.
With Vestergaard’s return, there’s speculation about whether he should start against Manchester United. Following a poor performance against Forest, Wout Faes may be dropped in favor of Conor Coady, who has been solid in their previous Carabao Cup victories. Coady’s experience alongside Caleb Okoli, who has impressed since joining from Atalanta, could be crucial against United.
While Vestergaard’s availability is a positive sign for Cooper, it’s likely he will be gradually reintroduced to the starting lineup rather than being thrown straight back in.
