Eddie Howe has announced that Callum Wilson will miss the upcoming match against Arsenal and is uncertain for next weekend’s game against Nottingham Forest.
Wilson has not yet played for Newcastle this season due to a back injury sustained during pre-season. In 2024, he has only made six appearances for the club, hindered by various injuries.
Initially, there was optimism that the 32-year-old would return by September, but that timeline has continued to shift. Regarding the upcoming match against Arsenal, Howe confirmed that Wilson will not participate and expressed doubts about his potential return at Nottingham Forest, where he last played a full 90 minutes.
Howe commented on Wilson’s condition, saying, “He’s doing okay and is gradually increasing his workload. There isn’t a specific injury, but he’s experiencing a sensation that prevents him from pushing himself as hard as necessary to compete at this level.
“To perform at this level, you need to be physically fit. He’s definitely out for this game, and we’ll decide on his status for Nottingham Forest based on how he feels, but it might be wise to wait given the two-week gap.”
The match against Arsenal will be Newcastle’s third in six days, with most of the squad from midweek set to play again. Kieran Trippier will miss the match, and there are concerns about Anthony Gordon and Alexander Isak, who both exited Wednesday’s victory with minor injuries. Howe noted, “They both seem fine. We’ll assess them today. Sometimes how players feel 48 hours post-match can differ from 24 hours, and it’s not always a linear recovery. Both have had some minor issues—Alex with his toe and Anthony with a groin problem—so we’ll make a call today.”
