Pundits Chris Sutton and Paul Merson have both predicted a 2-1 defeat for Leicester City against Ipswich Town this weekend.
The Foxes are heading to Portman Road after a challenging 3-1 loss to Nottingham Forest in their last Premier League match and a 5-2 defeat to Manchester United in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night.
Meanwhile, Ipswich Town squandered a 2-0 lead against Brentford, ultimately losing 3-2, and are still searching for their first league victory of the season. Both Sutton, writing for BBC Sport, and Merson believe they might achieve that on Saturday. Sutton commented, “I said last week that I wouldn’t predict another Ipswich win this season, but I’ve changed my mind. They were quite unfortunate to lose to Brentford; they deserved more from that match.
“Although Alan Shearer pointed out on Match of the Day that their stats are poor—they rank last in the Premier League for shots, expected goals, and touches in the opposition box, and second last for shots on target, goals conceded, and errors leading to goals—they started well, going 2-0 up.
“To then fall behind 3-2 and be reduced to 10 men is tough enough, but they managed to level late on before losing in stoppage time to a goal from Bryan Mbeumo. That kind of defeat can be hard to bounce back from.
“I’m not entirely convinced about Leicester either, but if Ipswich don’t win this time, it could seriously impact their confidence. Life in the Premier League has been challenging for them, and without three points soon, you have to wonder if they can beat anyone. Sutton’s prediction: 2-1.”
Former Villa and Arsenal midfielder Merson added to Sportskeeda, “Ipswich Town were 2-0 up against Brentford last weekend but ended up losing 3-2 after leveling at 3-3 late on.
“It worries me to think about when teams like Ipswich and Southampton will finally get their first win. If Ipswich lose this game, they’ll be eight points behind Leicester, marking ten games without a win—that’s a significant hurdle! This match is a cup final for Ipswich, and I believe they’ll win. Leicester’s loss to Nottingham Forest would have hurt their confidence.
“Forest is a prime example of how teams can improve if they avoid relegation. The gap between Championship teams and those that stay up widens. Look at Crystal Palace; they’ve had two crucial wins and are safe now.
“Everton has been in this situation before and managed to survive. The team below Leicester in the standings is Manchester United, and they certainly won’t get relegated. So, this is a must-win for both Ipswich and Leicester if they want to avoid relegation.” Merson also predicted a 2-1 win for Ipswich.
