Newcastle United finally returned to winning ways in the Premier League after beating Arsenal 1-0 on Saturday (2 November) at St James’ Park.
The Magpies were without a win in their last five league games, but Eddie Howe’s side hinted at returning to form in midweek when they defeated Chelsea 2-0.
They have carried forward the confidence into the game and picked up a deserved win against one of the best sides in the country.
Alexander Isak scored the only goal of the match in the 12th minute as Newcastle picked up all three points.
The 25-year-old striker timed his header perfectly and guided it into the net after Anthony Gordon picked him from the right-hand side with a magnificent cross.
Shearer was full of praise for Isak after the game. He said that the Swedish striker is “one of the best in the Premier League” and that he is a “huge” player for the Magpies.
“He (Isak) is a huge player for Newcastle,” said Shearer on Premier League TV productions.
“He is one of the players who can give Newcastle the spark. He’s got great abilities. He’s a top forward, one of the best in the Premier League.”
Isak has now scored 12 goals in 12 starts at St James’ Park, and he is indeed a huge player for the club.
Towards the end of the game, he ran out of steam, but prior to that, he was a constant threat.
Isak praised Gordon after the game, saying it was an “amazing” delivery from the England winger, and he couldn’t have missed it from there.
Shearer also felt that it was a well-worked-out goal, reminiscent of how most goals were scored in the 90s, where wingers whipped in crosses for the strikers to head into the box.
After recent disappointing results, the victory will lift the club. Howe made some changes in midfield, and it worked perfectly for him. Overall, it’s a fantastic win for the club.
