Julen Lopetegui should be dismissed immediately if West Ham United’s owners want to steer clear of a relegation battle this season.
West Ham embarrassed themselves at the City Ground against Nottingham Forest today, and Lopetegui deserves all the criticism he receives.
While Edson Alvarez’s foolish red card let everyone down, it will likely serve as an excuse for Lopetegui’s shortcomings. The Hammers were underwhelming from the start to the final whistle against Forest.
Lopetegui’s management since arriving has been disappointing, and the owners must be unhappy with how the team performed in this defeat.
Although he made some solid summer signings, he was too slow to integrate players like Niclas Fullkrug and Crysencio Summerville into the squad. By sticking with the same underperforming players from last season, he has drained the excitement surrounding the club.
Now, Lopetegui has placed himself in a difficult situation with no clear way out.
For David Sullivan, the solution is clear: sack Julen Lopetegui now, and West Ham could thrive. It’s time for Sullivan to make a decisive move and let go of the 58-year-old.
I typically support giving new managers time, but it’s evident he isn’t the right fit. West Ham lacks a clear footballing identity, and Lopetegui seems uncertain about how to improve the team.
The club should appoint Thomas Frank immediately—just pay his £9 million release clause and show real ambition. I’ve been advocating for Frank as our manager for over a year now.
He has consistently demonstrated his managerial prowess at Brentford, getting his team to play exciting football and improving every signing—think Bryan Mbeumo, Yoane Wissa, and Christian Norgaard.
Imagine what Frank could achieve with the players we have at the London Stadium!
Frank is tactically sharp and a fantastic man-manager. If West Ham brought him in, it would be the best £9 million investment the club has made in a long time.
So, David Sullivan, please make a serious and professional decision. Pay the release clause and bring in someone who can elevate our club.
He had no issue spending £50 million on Niclas Fullkrug and an untested Brazilian teenager, Luis Guilherme.
I reject the notion of being careful about what we wish for. We wanted Moyes out, but we didn’t expect to replace him with a Spanish version of himself.
In my opinion, Julen Lopetegui’s time at West Ham is over, and Thomas Frank is the right person to lead us forward.
